Roger Federer shows an outstanding performance in the Basel semi-final. The local hero defeats Daniil Medvedev in two sets.
The 20-time Grand Slam champion quickly took the lead to 4-1 in the first leg after defending against a break ball in the first game. With a further service breakthrough and a sovereign service game, the “Maestro” first round bagged in after only 19 minutes.
Federer, who had only played moderately in the previous laps, showed his whole class in the encounter with the young Russian and played the 22-year-old dizzy at times.
Also at the beginning of the second set the pace was much too high for the 20th of the ATP world rankings – Federer broke to the early 1:0. With sensational strokes, the Swiss not only enraptured the domestic fans, but could also immediately fix a double break to 3-0.
Federer fended off a break point from the Tokyo champions in the following service game and increased it to 4:0. And then Medvedev could at least cheer a little more: He won the game 1:4.
However, this should not change the result any more. After defending a match ball, the Russian was able to secure a third game and took Federer’s serve to 3:5 once again. Nevertheless, the Swiss secured his 6:1 and 6:4 success shortly thereafter thanks to an outstanding performance. In the final he will play against Zverev winner Marius Copil.
