Simona Halep was voted best player of the year by the WTA in the WTA finals. The title for best comeback player 2018 goes to Serena Williams.
The world number one Halep won her very first Grand Slam title this year at the French Open in Paris and will finish the year relatively unchallenged as number one in the world rankings.
In 2018, the Romanian also won the events in Shenzhen and Montreal. In the fight for the coveted WTA-Award she was able to assert herself against the German Angelique Kerber. The 27-year-old has to watch the WTA final in Singapore due to a back injury.
The award for the best comebacker of the year goes to Serena Williams. The US American reached the finals in Wimbledon and at the US Open. And this despite the fact that she had only become a mother in September last year.
The most successful newcomer is Aryna Sabalenka. With titles in New Haven and Wuhan, the 20-year-old played her way into the top 20 of the world rankings. She had started the year outside the top 70.
Like Kiki Bertens, she had a fantastic year 2018. Bertens received the award as the most improved player of the year for her great achievements. The Dutchman is in the top 10 of the world rankings and, due to Halep’s injury, is even playing at the year-end tournament in Singapore, where she brought Angelique Kerber to her knees in her first group match.
