ATP: Rothenbaum: DTB boss Ulrich Klaus wishes for combined tournament in Hamburg

Ulrich Klaus, President of the German Tennis Federation (DTB), wants to make the traditional tournament at Hamburg’s Rothenbaum more attractive again in the medium term.

“My wish is that in five years Hamburg will again attract attention far beyond Germany as a combined men’s and women’s tournament,” said the 68-year-old in an interview with the Hamburger Abendblatt.

Only two weeks ago, the DTB, the city of Hamburg, the Club an der Alster as owner of the stadium and the new tournament organiser Peter-Michael Reichel had agreed on investments in the facility in the Harvestehude district during a conversation in the Hanseatic city of Hamburg. Considerations of relocating the German Open to another German city have been off the table ever since.

Over the past ten years, Michael Stich has served as tournament director at Rothenbaum. After the expiration of the contract between the DTB and the Wimbledon winner, the association decided on a new cooperation with Reichel until 2023.
