WTA: Rittner on the golden generation: “This won’t come back so soon”

Barbara Rittner fears after the end of the golden era around stars like Angelique Kerber or Julia Görges a time without great success.

“This is a great generation that we won’t get back so quickly,” said Rittner, who also cited the injury misfortune of the younger players as the reason for the lack of confidence in the Frankfurter Rundschau.

Three-time Grand Slam winners Kerber and Görges, who are fighting for victory at the WTA Elite Trophy in China, are both 30 years old. Petkovic is even one year older, the former Wimbledon finalist Lisicki only one year younger.

The successes of the quartet had to be “melted on the tongue,” said Rittner: “That won’t come again so quickly.” According to Rittner, Petkovic and Lisicki, who had also been thrown back by injuries, had worked “better and more purposefully” than the now young generation.
