ATP: Fernando Verdasco – The ball children help gladly

The Spanish veteran Fernando Verdasco has once again commented on the incident at the ATP Masters 1000 Tournament in Paris-Bercy, which brought him much criticism.

The pictures of Fernando Verdasco, impatiently persuading and gesticulating a ball child, made the rounds on the Internet – and put the Spaniard on the defensive. After the incident in the semi-final of Shenzhen, where Verdasco was defeated by the Japanese Yoshito Nishioka, there was also a discussion about the distribution of tasks for the ball children. However, it was decided several months ago that the players themselves would now be responsible for getting their towels at the NextGen finals in Milan.

Verdasco was questioned about the case during the week in Paris, where he lost to Lucky Loser Malek Jaziri. And rowed back. A little.

“Of course, I didn’t want to act like that,” Verdasco explained. “But in the social media, there are just too many people who talk too much. I have received many messages asking me to apologize. It looked like I was doing something wrong. I was just trying to make it clear to the boy that we only have 25 seconds.”

In Shenzhen there was an extremely high humidity. And the ball boy simply didn’t understand English. “If you finish a point on the net, you can’t run back to get your towel if there’s only 20 seconds.” By the way, Fernando Verdasco does not think much of the towel rail mentioned, which Dominic Thiem recently described as an almost perfect solution. After all, the ball children tried to help the players. “And that’s what they like to do,” the Spanish veteran concluded.
