WTA: Substitute woman Qiang Wang storms into Zhuhai final

Qiang Wang and Ashleigh Barty compete in the final of the WTA Elite Trohpy in Zhuhai. The Chinese left two-time Major winner Garbine Muguruza with only two games in the second semi-final.

Actually Qiang Wang had already been eliminated in the group stage of the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai after her defeat against Madison Keys. After the retreat of the US-American, however, Wang stepped in as a substitute – and made the most of her unexpected opportunity. The Chinese player only needed 71 minutes to beat former Wimbledon and French Open winners Garbine Muguruza 6-2 and 6-0.

Wang will face Ashleigh Barty in Sunday’s final. The young Australian had won the first semi-final against Julia Görges 4:6, 6:3 and 6:2 after being trailing the set. Görges had remained successful at the “B-WM” in Zhuhai in 2017.
