While there is still a lot going on for the men in London, the world rankings for the women are quite clear at the end of the year.
Novak Djokovic has achieved the unbelievable and has played his way back from 22nd place in the middle of the year to 1st place – even the final defeat at the Paris Masters against Karen Khachanov does not change this. The main reason for Djokovic’s jump to the top: 29 victories with only 2 defeats since July, with tournament successes in Wimbledon, Cincinnati, at the US Open and in Shanghai – strong!
Djokovic is not the first player to have played his way to the top from a place outside the top 20 in a single season – Marat Safin even made it from 38th to 1st in 2000, but by the end of the year he was second (behind Gustavo Kuerten). Djokovic could make history with a good result at the ATP Finals in London and as the year-end world number one!
Behind the “comebacker of the year” with 8,045 points Rafael Nadal (7,480), Roger Federer (6,020) and Alexander Zverev (5,085) are in the ranks, Dominic Thiem (3,895) is on position 8.
Karen Khachanov with 11th place and Borna Coric with 12th place are her highest placings so far. Also Daniil Medvedev stands with place 16 as high as never before.
Other German players in the top 100 are Philipp Kohlschreiber on 36, Jan-Lenard Struff on 58, Peter Gojowczyk on 59, Mischa Zverev on 69 and Maximilian Marterer on 75. In Austria Dennis Novak is number two after Dominic Thiem with rank 154.
The ATP World Ranking List
In the women’s singles, the top elite is ranked through – even though the 125k series of the WTA can still make some progress in the wider field. One thing’s for sure: French Open winner Simona Halep will be leading again in 2018 ahead of Wimbledon winner Angelique Kerber on a strong second place. Behind it: Melbourne Champion Filly Caroline Wozniacki, WTA Final Winner Elina Svitolina and US Open Winner Naomi Osaka.
With Osaka (on 5), Stephens (on 6), Kiki Bertens (on 9) and Daria Kasatkina (on 10), four women will be in the top ten for the first time at the end of the year. Julia Görges, also top ten player for the first time during the season, concludes the season in 14th place.
Ashleigh Barty has made a jump to 15th place thanks to her victory at the WTA Elite Trophy – her current career-high, finalist Qiang Wang is also higher than ever with 20th place.
From a German perspective Andrea Petkovic (64), Tatjana Maria (79) and Mona Barthel (81) follow. After her cautious comeback Laura Siegemund played her way up to 117th place, Carina Witthöft (172) and Sabine Lisicki (229) will fight for a comeback in the top 100 next season.
In Austria Barbara Haas fell out of the Top 200 and is ranked 204, Julia Grabher follows on 247.
