Fabio Fognini celebrated three tournament victories in 2018. The Italian wants to play even more successfully in the coming season.
Fabio Fognini can look back on a solid year: The Italian has won three titles in Sao Paulo, Bastad and Los Cabos and will finish 2018 in 13th place in the ATP World Ranking. The last match of the year took place again in front of a big backdrop, in the hall of Paris-Bercy against Roger Federer.
But it was there that Fognini’s ankle tortured him, not as bad as before the semi-final in Beijing, where the 31-year-old was unable to play Juan Martin del Potro. Fognini had won against the Argentinian in the Los Cabos final, and a Da Capo was within the realm of possibility.
Next year, Fabio Fognini will also be able to call on the help of Corrado Barrazutti, the Italian legend who heads his country’s Davis Cup team. Anyway, Fognini still has fun playing tennis. “I will resign in five or ten years,” Flavia Pennetta’s husband told the newspaper Il Messagero. “And when I quit, I want to have a great and healthy family.”
It is well known that Fognini took the first steps in this direction long ago, son Federico already counts 18 months. “My family has changed my life for the better,” continues Fognini. “Now I know there are other things than the tennis court and my racket.”
