Fed Cup: Czech Republic wins title for ninth time

The Czech Republic has reclaimed the Fed Cup. Katerina Siniakova defeated Sofia Kenin from the USA after defending two match points and set a score of 3:0 for the hosts.

Czech tennis ladies have won the Fed Cup for the ninth time. The hosts prevailed against defending champions USA in the final in Prague. Already after the third singles match on Sunday the Czech team was leading 3:0. Katerina Siniakova scored the decisive third point with a 7:5, 5:7, 7:5 victory against Sofia Kenin.

Siniakova also won her first singles match against Alison Riske on Saturday, Barbora Strycova was successful against Kenin. It was the sixth triumph for the Czech Republic in the past eight years.

Both teams competed in the traditional team competition with only one B team. The Williams sisters Serena and Venus, French Open finalists Sloane Stephens and Madison Keys had cancelled the 17-time winner USA just as early as Serena and Venus. The Czech team lacked Petra Kvitova, seventh in the world rankings, and Karolina Pliskova, number eight.

The German Fed Cup women had failed in the semi-final against the Czech Republic in Stuttgart in April.
