Novak Djokovic underlined his position as a favourite at his first appearance at the ATP Finals in London. The Serb defeated John isner smoothly in two sets.
Top favourite Novak Djokovic (31) started into the ATP season finals in London with a commanding victory. The world number one and five times champion from Serbia beat John Isner (USA) 6:4, 6:3 and in the group “Guga Kuerten” 6:4, 6:3 after 73 minutes before Alexander Zverev (Hamburg) to the top of the table. On Wednesday there will be a duel between Djokovic and the German number one.
Zverev had won his opening match against Marin Cilic from Croatia 7:6 (7:5), 7:6 (7:1) and was heading for the semi-final on Saturday. The group winner and the group runner-up qualify for the knockout round.
Djokovic has won his last title in the 2015 season finale, his eleventh participation in the tournament of the eight season’s best. Isner (33) is making his debut this year. The 2.08 m giant was the first to enter the field for the injured Spaniard Rafael Nadal. He has to deal with Cilic in his second match on Wednesday and meets Zverev on Friday.
