ATP: Nadal confirmed as first player for Barcelona Open

Spaniard Rafael Nadal will again be playing at his home tournament in Barcelona next year. The 32-year-old will be the defending champion at the ATP 500 tournament.

Last year the Majorcan won the final against the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas. Nadal has already triumphed eleven times in the Catalan capital – and that with only 14 performances.

“I want to reconfirm my appearance in Barcelona. Because it will be my 15th participation, it will be a special year for me. See you in April”, Nadal is already looking forward to the tournament, which will take place from April 20th to 28th.

“The fact that Rafa is coming to Barcelona again is great, even though it seems obvious to the fans. It makes us very proud to have the best clay court player of all time,” says Tournament Director Albert Costa.

In 2018 Nadal had won in the run-up to the event in Monte Carlo, after which he was successful on his beloved underground in Rome and Paris. The 32-year-old will therefore continue to be the top favourite in the coming season.

On the Centre Court, which is named after the Spanish runner-up in the world rankings, three to four other top ten players will serve in addition to Nadal. Last year, Novak Djokovic, Dominic Thiem, David Goffin and Kei Nishikori, among others, were honoured.
