WTA: Witthöft fights his way to the round of sixteen in Luxembourg

Carina Witthöft (22) was the first of five German tennis players to reach the round of sixteen at the indoor tournament in Luxembourg.The world rankings-73.from Hamburg defended a match point in their opening match against Varvara Lepchenko (USA/No. 8) and won after 2:22 hours 7:6 (7:1), 2:6,7:6:6 (7:1).

In the round of the best 16 Witthöft meets Yevgeniya Rodina (Russia) or qualifier Jana Fett (Croatia).

On Tuesday, the other Germans will be on stage – among others, the top seeded Angelique Kerber (Kiel) and Monica Puig (Puerto Rico) will be reissuing the Olympic final of Rio, which Puig had won.Also in use are Sabine Lisicki (Berlin) and Andrea Petkovic – both equipped with a wildcard – and Tatjana Maria (Bad Saulgau/No. 6).
