Davis Cup: Gerald Melzer scores 1:0

Gerald Melzer scored a fiercely contested three-movement victory against Belarus in a 1-0 win for Austria. Dominic Thiem is about to expand his leadership.

Melzer won after 2 hours and 15 minutes with 2:6,7:5,6:4 over 23-year-old Ilya Ivashka, currently the world’s number 190.

Ivashka got the better start into the match and took first place. The 27-year-old Melzer managed the turnaround with his first break of the match to 6:5 in the second set – and the following set equalization. After that, he went straight into the third set with a double break to 3-0. Even though Ivashka was able to catch up again, Melzer had a break until the end of the match, where he lost 6:4.

The second match of the day is Dominic Thiem versus Dzmitry Zhyrmont.
