Fabio Fognini won the final at the ATP World Tour 250 Tournament in Sao Paulo. Against the Chilean surprise man Nicolas Jarry, the Italian won in three sets.
The final for his sixth title on the tour couldn’t have started worse for Fabio Fognini. The 30-year-old hotspur was literally overrun in the first set, but after an increase in performance Fognini was able to celebrate his 1:6,6:1,6:4 victory in the end.
In the decision, the world’s No. 20 was on the spot with Jarry on serve, just to give the advantage back in the fourth game. Fognini didn’t let himself be thrown off course, and the winning needle-prick succeeded with the break to the 4:3, which he then transported to the tournament victory.
In the semi-finals, Fognini had finished the winning streak of Pablo Cuevas, the Uruguayan had stormed to the title in Sao Paulo in the last three years.
Jarry, on the other hand, can report the small sand court tour in South America as a big success despite the final defeat. In Rio de Janeiro, the 22-year-old Schlacks had reached the preliminary round of a 500cc event for the first time. Thanks to a further 150 ATP points, he is now 61st in the world rankings published on Monday – a new career record!
For Fognini, it’s a place upstairs. After his sixth career title on the red ash,”Fogna” is now in position 19.
