On the first day of the 82nd US Masters Sergio Garcia experienced a personal disaster, five of the Spaniard’s balls landed in the water. Tiger Woods had to realize, however, that he is not in top form yet.
Garcia played a record low and ranks 85th with +9. Especially on the 15th hole the defending champion was desperate.
A full 13 strokes meant a minus record, five of his attempts landed in the water. The overall result of 81 strokes is the worst of any defending champion in Masters history.
All eyes were also on Tiger Woods, who had described himself in advance as a “walking miracle”.
Woods played well, but not for a long time as well as it would have been necessary for a top position. Three bogeys meant finally a 73 on the note and thus one over par. Right now that means shared 29th place.
Also for Martin Kaymer Thursday was rather mixed. Starting with a slight injury to his hand, the German could not get close to his best performance. He played a 74 and is now in 42nd place.
But Kaymer was not really disappointed. He also sees Augusta as part of his return to top form.
Jordan Spieth was also on the road with record-breaking results. The winner of 2015 swept across the green and finally stayed under par with six. Seven birdies and one eagle at three bogeys are the clear lead.
First pursuers are Tony Finau and Matt Kuchar. Both share second place, but are two shots behind after the furious round of Spieth. They want to unlock on Friday.
