WTA: Will Halep’s cancellation open the door for Görges in New Haven?

The North American summer tour has brought Simona Halep many successes. But also many matches. Her cancellation of the WTA tournament in New Haven increases Julia Görges’ chances.

After all, Simona Halep pulled the rip cord: The world number one, who won nine matches in Montréal and Cincinnati in Kiki Bertens on Sunday, cancelled her participation in New Haven at the last minute. This is understandable, especially since Halep wants to really attack at the US Open. Last year, she was eliminated in round one against Maria Sharapova.

Cincinnati’s other three semi-finalists, Aryna Sabalenka and Petra Kvitova, have already overcome the first hurdle. Kvitova defeated Agnieszka Radwanska in two sets, Sabalenka defeated the eternal Sam Stosur as well.

Bertens can open Tuesday, two days after her greatest career triumph. The Dutch woman has to play Anett Kontaveit, again, also in Cincinnati the Estonian was in Bertens’ way.

Bertens won the final against Halep with an unbelievable fighting performance, it also needed strong nerves: The Romanian missed a match point in the tiebreak of the second set and lost her third Cincinnati final.

The tiredness of the competition could, however, put Julia Görges in the cards, who is already playing Dayana Yastremska for a place in the quarter-finals. On the upper branch Görges is by far the best classified player in the tableau after the cancellation of Halep and the defeat of Karolina Pliskova. Since Monday Julia Görges is ranked ninth in the WTA World Ranking.

Görges had to end her appearance in Cincinnati against Kristina Mladenovic due to a calf injury, in New Haven the German Fed Cup playeraber could now get the necessary self-confidence for the US Open.
