The death of favorites in Wuhan continues – only two seeds are left in the tournament.
The tournament of surprises continues in Wuhan, China – and Olympic champion Monica Puig is back in form. In the Night Session, the Puerto Rican beat the reigning Australian Open winner Caroline Wozniacki 7:6 (10), 7:5 and was not discouraged by missed chances.
After a false start with a 3-0 deficit at the beginning, Puig came into a winner’s mood and used her sixth set point against the Dane in an exciting tie-break. Puig also made up for it 1:3 in run two and finally turned her seventh chance into a victory.
Of the 16 women seeded, only two are still in the race: Ashleigh Barty (16), who won against Angelique Kerber, and Garbine Muguruza (14).
All the more surprising as 16 of the first 17 of the world rankings were at the start.
For Puig, currently number 51 in the world, the successful last weeks continue: She won 14 of her last 17 matches, including qualification matches. Also in Wuhan she first had to go through the qualification tournament.
