ATP: Gael Monfils tries it with Australian coach

Gael Monfils has found a new coach. The often injured Frenchman will try his luck in the coming season with the Australian Liam Smith.

Mikael Tillström has had his day. It remains to be seen whether the Swede will suffer a lot from not sitting in Gael Monfils’ box anymore. The French eccentric finished 2018 in 29th position, played (and won) a Challenger tournament in between, but won the title in Doha right at the beginning of the season.

Tennis player Gael Monfils’s last picture for 2018 will remain that of a premature handshake, the 32-year-old having had to give up in the quarter-finals against Fernando Verdasco in the second set.

Monfils has now secured the services of Liam Smith for next year. Smith is one of Tennis Australia’s coaches and has in the past taken care of players like Matthew Ebden and Radu Albot.

Corentin Moutet, one of the few male talents of the French Tennis Federation, has also taken on a new trainer. Next year, Moutet will be looked after by Emmanuel Planque, who has ended his collaboration with Lucas Pouille at the end of the season.
