ATP: Grigor Dimitrov opens season in Brisbane

A popular starting point for the season is the ATP tournament in Brisbane. Grigor Dimitrov will now also belong to the top-class starting field.

Grigor Dimitrov has announced his schedule for the first months of the new year. The Bulgarian will start the season in Brisbane like last year.

The tournament in Australia has a strong starting field, led by Rafael Nadal and Alexander Zverev. Dimitrov has some points to defend right at the start of the season, after he could only be stopped in last year’s semi-final by the later champion Nick Kyrgios.

The 27-year-old will also have to watch out for other top stars like Andy Murray, Kei Nishikori, Kyle Edmund and local hero Alex de Minaur, in addition to Nadal and Zverev.

After the 500cc event in Brisbane, Dimitrov will travel to the Fast-4 tournament in Sydney to play a fun tournament alongside the top stars of the ATP and WTA Tour.

The Australian Open will conclude the Australian tournaments for the Bulgarians. After two great results in the past two years, Dimitrov is also under pressure there. Since his triumph at the ATP finals in 2017, the level of the former miracle player has flattened out and Dimitrov has lost ground in the world rankings.

After the first major event of the year Dimitrov will compete in Rotterdam. The Bulgarian already gave the promise for the tournament in Belgium early. In all probability, defending champion Roger Federer and another high-calibre draw are waiting there.
