WTA: Kerber after defeating Pliskova in Tokyo semi-final
Angelique Kerber has secured a place in the semi-finals of the WTA tournament in Tokyo with a convincing performance: The best German player beat Karolina Pliskova 7:6 (5) and 7:5 and now meets the Russian Anastasija Pavlyuchenkova.
The former world number one Angelique Kerber is back in the semi-finals of a WTA tournament after more than five months.At the Hartplatz event in Tokyo, the two-time Grand Slam winner from Kiel beat Karolina Pliskova (Czech Republic/No. 2)7:6 (7:5), 7:5 in the new edition of the US Open Final 2016.
After their quarter-final win, Kerber will face Anastasija Pavlyuchenkova in the final four.The 29-year-old lost to the Russian in Monterrey, Mexico in April after her last semi-final appearance in the final.There was also played on hard court.
“I feel good, it’s been a great tournament for me so far.Karolina played great here in Tokyo, so I’m very happy about the semi-final draw,”said Kerber:”It’s always hard to play against her, I’ve been focusing on my game.It was an important victory.”
Angelique Kerber needed five match points – but then the player from Kiel put a backhand on the baseline, which Karolina Pliskova could not return to the field.After 1:49 hours it was finally 7:6 (5) and 7:5 for Kerber, who had also won the last meeting of the two in the final of the US Open 2016.
