Laver Cup: Federer expands European lead
Roger Federer won his first match in the Laver Cup, which he co-initiated.
Switzerland’s 19-times Grand Slam champion from Switzerland won the newly created continental competition in Prague against US American Sam Querrey 6-4,6-2 and extended the European team’s lead over the rest of the world to 5-1.On Friday Alexander Zverev (Hamburg) had also won his singles match against the Canadian Denis Shapovalov.
On Saturday, Federer’s old rival Rafael Nadal (Spain) will face Jack Sock (USA) and Czech Tomas Berdych will play Nick Kyrgios (Australia).Federer and Nadal will also be playing in doubles together for the first time, playing Querrey and Sock,”It’s really special to feel the support of Rafa and the whole team,”Federer said after his commanding win.
In the Laver Cup, named after Australia’s legendary tennis player Rod Laver, six European top players compete against six professionals from the rest of the world.The matches will be played from Friday to Sunday, with a total of twelve matches scheduled.Every day there are three singles and a doubles match, there are two sets of wins.
On Friday there was one point for each victory, on Saturday there were two points and on Sunday three points.A minimum of 13 points is required to win the Laver Cup.Each player will play a maximum of two singles in the course of the tournament, four doubles must be played, and each pair of doubles may only be named once.
