WTA: Caroline Garcia in Beijing with the next coup
Caroline Garcia has won the China Open 2017: The Frenchman defeated the new number one in the WTA World Ranking, Simona Halep from Romania, and won her second title within a week.
Simona Halep will be the first Romanian woman to take the lead in the tennis world rankings on Monday. The 26-year-old replaces Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza (Spain) at the top of the podium despite the final defeat in Beijing and is already the fifth number one this year on the WTA tour. There has never been more fluctuation at the top since the introduction of the computer rankings in 1975.
By mid-season Angelique Kerber (Kiel) and Serena Williams (USA) had alternated to first place, while Kerbers form crisis and Williams’ pregnancy washed Karolina Pliskova (Czech Republic), then Muguruza and now Halep to the front. She had missed the jump on the tennis throne three times before. She was defeated in the final of the French Open, in Wimbledon and at the U. S. hard court tournament in Cincinnati/Ohio, when she was about to give up her childhood dream.
In Beijing this finally came true, as Halep didn’t mind that she lost the final against the French Caroline Garcia 4:6,6:7 (3:7).”At first I couldn’t believe it at all, so the tears came to me,”Halep said, talking about the “best moment” of her life.”But I have even more dreams for my career,”Halep said in 2018.So far she has lost twice in the final of Roland Garros (2014,2017).
Caroline Garcia, however, continued her triumphant success of the last few weeks, and after her triumph in Wuhan, won the title at the last WTA Premier Mandatory event of the year. The French player has a good chance of qualifying as the last player for the WTA final in Singapore. At the end of last year, Garcia had announced that she would withdraw from the French Fed Cup team and her double partnership with Kristina Mladenovic in order to focus on her individual career. In the autumn of 2017, this decision is now bearing fruit, as Garcia will be listed for the first time as a member of the WTA World Ranking Top Ten starting Monday.
