ATP: Peers and continents win double title in Shanghai

Favourite victory in the final of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Shanghai: Henri Kontinen and John Peers beat Lukazs Kubot and Marcelo Melo in two sets.

A tournament according to the seed list is rather the exception on the ATP tour – even if, for example, at the Masters-1000-Tournament in Shanghai, top seeded Rafael Nadal, the number two Roger Federer and Marin Cilic, took fourth place in the semi-finals.In the doubles competition, the paper form was even more accurate: the four best pairs in the final round – where the favourites also won.

The fact that Sunday’s qualifying final between John Peers and Henri Kontinen on the one hand and Wimbledon winners Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo on the other turned out to be a one-sided affair, which the Australian and Finn won 6-4 and 6-2, contradicted the dramaturgy of the entire tournament. And also the experiences from the Wimbledon semi-final, which Kubot and Melo won 9:7 in the fifth set.

Continents and peers are loyal to each other, the world ranking shows exactly the same number of points for the winning pair from Shanghai. 1,000 points more cement the top positions of the two, the qualification for the ATP final in London has long since been achieved.Feeling already after the first Grand Slam tournament, which ended with the final victory over the Bryan brothers.Only real black spot on the continents/peers’ vests: the first round out at the French Open against David Marrero and Tommy Robredo.
