WTA: Julia Görges new German Number 1

With her victory in Moscow, Julia Görges not only won her first tournament since 2011, but also placed herself ahead of Angelique Kerber in the world rankings.

If the inclined tennis observer Julia Görges had predicted before the start of the 2017 season that she would not only overtake Angelique Kerber but also Serena Williams in the WTA World Ranking, the German Fed Cup player would probably have fallen for the hobby fans.

In fact, Görges is now number one in the current WTA rankings in Germany after her triumphant performance in Moscow, namely on position 18. And for the time being, it has also outperformed the resting best in the industry from the USA.

So Julia Görges won nine places last week, which is highly respectable, but it’s still not enough for the German record: Carina Witthöft has stormed forward 22 positions with her title premiere in Luxembourg, the Hamburg rider is now ranked 51st.

Simona Halep is still in the lead with a marginal lead over Garbine Muguruza, who has already begun her Sunday victory.

Austria’s number one is still Barbara Haas, the 21-year-old has improved by four positions and is currently in 165th place.
