WTA: Vandeweghe, Sevastova, Barty in Zhuhai semi-final
Three of the four semi-finalists in Zhuhai are certain: Coco Vandeweghe and Anastasija Sevastova qualified for the final round after Ashleigh Barty.
For Coco Vandewghe, the last few weeks in Asia (just one match win in four tournaments) may not have been brilliant, but in the WTA Elite Trophy in Zhuhai, the US open semifinalist is already in the final round. Opponent Elena Vesnina had to fight with herself and problems in the lower back, Vandeweghe won 6:3 and 6:2.
Anastasija Sevastova, the Latvian woman who has been living in Austria for a few years, is also among the last four. Sevastova prevailed over Barbora Strycova 6-3 and 6-4, the same result as Ashleigh Barty Angelique Kerber’s first match of the day in their winter break. The last open spot will be between Kristina Mladenovic and Julia Görges.
Successes in Zhuhai also have a very positive effect on the players’ coffers: For a success in the preliminary round there is a nice sum of 76,300 US dollars, plus a nice entry fee of at least 27,500 US dollars.
