ATP: World Tour Awards: Federer receives three awards

Roger Federer won three awards at the ATP World Tour Awards. Denis Shapovalov and the Bryan brothers also received an award.

Federer was awarded the Audience Award for the 15th time. Favourite was chosen as ATPWorldTour. com Fans’ Favourite for the third time in a row. In addition, the players of the ATP Tour voted Federer for the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award and the comeback player of the year 2017.

Federer had started the season as number 17 in the world rankings, after the Swiss rider missed out on a knee operation in the second half of 2016. The 36-year-old won two Grand Slams (Australian Open, Wimbledon) and three Masters (Indian Wells, Miami, Shanghai) this season.

The Romanian double specialist Horia Tecau was honoured with the Arthur Ashe Humanitarian Award. The current US Open Champion campaigned for the rights and education of children in Romania and is also an ambassador for UNICEF.

Denis Shapovalov, however, has won the award as a player with the biggest development step of the past season. Like the Sportsmanship Award, the prize was awarded by the players themselves. Shapovalov started the year as the world’s 250th and made it into the top 50 with a semi-final appearance at the Masters in Montreal.

Neville Godwin, who has since broken up with his protégé Kevin Anderson, was honoured as coach of the year. Godwin was chosen by his colleagues on the tour for Anderson’s final appearance at the US Open.

The prize for the most popular doubles of the ATP tour went to the 13th place. Let’s take a look at the US-American couple Bob Bryan/Mike Bryan.
