He had risen in the course of the week, in the match against Goffin Dominic Thiem broke in after a strong start. After 1 hour and 11 minutes, the Belgian was called 4:6,1:6 for the first time in the semi-finals in London.

Thiem got off to a good start, took Goffon’s serve off to zero and took the lead 3:0 – then he was completely torn apart. Goffin scored 20 of the following 23 points and turned 5:3, mainly because Thiem kept on drawing. Twelve unforced mistakes were on the list after 4:6 – and once again a weak first serve rate of only 46 percent.

Thiem was treated at the change of sides, started to zero in second set, but got the breaks 1:2 and 1:4. Although he didn’t get up and entangled Goffin seven times over the opening, he didn’t use any of his three break chances. Goffin, on the other hand, won the decision with another break and the second match point.

“It’s never easy to play against a friend, I was very focused from the beginning,”said Goffin. After the match against Nadal he did not go into the Dimitrov-Match, but now he was fit again.

On Saturday, Goffin will be second in the group “Pete Sampras” against the first of the group “Boris Becker” – Roger Federer. In a direct comparison, the Swiss player leads by 6:0. Thiem is still waiting for his first semi-final at the ATP finals. In the previous year, too, he had left London with only one win in the group stage.
