WTA: Kerber: Becker thinks a change of coach is right

Boris Becker welcomed the change of coach in Angelique Kerber’s team, saying,”This was the right move at the right moment,”three times Wimbledon winner Becker told the Sports Information Service (SID) in London:”It was time for Angie to make a cut”.

After a disappointing season without winning the tournament, former world number one Kerber broke away from her long-time coach Torben Beltz and last Thursday announced the Belgian Wim Fissette’s commitment for 2018.

“Fissette is a trainer who has coached several top players. I think the choice is a good one,”said Becker,”but the truth is, as we all know, on the pitch. Ultimately, it must fit humanly.”

Becker also had a lot of praise for Beltz, who led Kerber to the Australian Open and US Open triumph in 2016:”Torben is a top man and will therefore continue to find a good job in the future,”said Becker, who has been working as Head of Men’s Tennis for the German Tennis Association (DTB) since August.

Beltz had coached Kerber during her previous professional career, except for a good two-year break (end of 2012 to early 2015), in which she was supported by Benjamin Ebrahimzadeh.
