ATP: Judy Murray:”ATP tour is too hard”
Judy Murray, mother of triple Grand Slam winner Andy, has expressed criticism about the tournament calendar of the ATP Tour. According to Murray, the season lasts too long, and you’re worried about the match format in the Davis Cup and Grand Slam tournaments.
“The men’s tour is extremely tiring and takes too long,”said Judy Murray in an interview with the Spanish Mundo Deportivo,”The best-of-five matches at Grand Slams and the Davis Cup are physically, but also mentally, extremely exhausting”.
The latter competition in particular should undergo a comprehensive reform. Murray demands that the world’s oldest annual team competition should only be played every other year.
A series of injuries from top players outside the top 10 gave players a chance to establish themselves at the top of the world in the second half of the season, which is a thorn in Murray’s side:”The calendar has to be fundamentally changed. Last year, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer had to pause for a few months, but this year other good players for the US Open failed.”
Apart from that, Murray was astonished by the strong performances of Nadal and Federer last season,”I was partly surprised,”said Murray,”but partly not. You’ve been in the lead for so many years. This showed that they are fantastic players, especially Rafa, who is a great fighter.”
Murray, hopes that her son Andy will return to the tour after a hip injury next season. Andy Murray has since slipped to 16th place in the world rankings.
