WTA: Williams sisters:”Domestic violence destroys whole life”

Venus and Serena Williams spoke surprisingly frankly at an event last weekend about the murder of their sister Yetunde Price. The two of them are vehemently committed to peaceful coexistence.

“Violence has affected our lives. We lost our oldest sister due to violence,”Serena Williams told us during a panel discussion in Washington D. C.. Price was murdered in September 2003 at the age of 31 on an open road, and the killer shot her in Compton, California from a moving car. 14 years later, her sisters still remember with horror.

Dealing with the situation of 14 years ago was understandably not easy for her:”One of the hardest things in our lives was to tell her (Prices, Note) children what happened to her mother. You can’t prepare for that.”

Today, the two of them continue to support organizations that promote violence prevention. At an event organised by the Driving Force Group, an NGO working for equal rights for all, the Americans spoke about the consequences of such crimes:”Violence influences not only the lives of the victims’ relatives, but also those of the perpetrators,”Venus explained,”destroying their entire lives. If you’re a parent, it’s not your plan for your child to become a perpetrator.”
