Australian Open: Australia Cancellation: Jankovic’ Series ends after 56 Grand Slams

The Australian Open will not have two prominent names in the program before the tournament begins. Svetlana Kuznetsova and Jelena Jankovic have to cancel their start at the first Grand Slam of the year.

Even before the first serve, the first cancellations for the first Grand Slam of the year in Australia are already hailing. There are prominent names on the list. As was to be feared in late autumn, the Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova will not be able to compete in the Australian Open.

In November, the 32-year-old underwent wrist surgery. Immediately after the surgery, Kuznetsova said:”Everything went well and I should be completely recovered and fit in a few weeks, with the hope of a great season in 2018″, wrote “Kuzi” on her instagram page. It is only now known that this is not the case. Her doctor is said not to have released her for the tournament in Down Under and her chances of a start are very slim, according to the Russian at Russia’s Sport Express.

Last season “Kuzi” returned to the top of the world and experienced its “second spring”. On Instagram, the Russian shared a picture of her training and nurtured hopes that she will be able to start after all.

Jelena Jankovic has to accept a hard damper. The ever-popular WTA tour also has to cancel the Australian Open due to injury. At the same time, this marks the end of an unbelievable series: After 56 Grand Slam tournaments in a row, the Serbian woman misses a major for the first time in 14 years. Only the Italian Francesca Schiavone took part in more Grand Slams (61) in a row. Number 159 in the world said:”I have decided to postpone my return to the tour. Even though I don’t know if I’m going to play again.”

In summer, the 32-year-old from Belgrade underwent surgery on her back and has been in rehabilitation since then. In 17 years on the tour I have never had a holiday, this is now my first one. I would like to continue my career, but it’s too early to say anything,”said Jankovic. In 2008, the Serbian woman was at the top of the ranking and has long been regarded as a legend in the tennis circus. A comeback can only be expected in March for the hard court season in Miami and Indian Wells.

There is also bad news for all Chinese fans. The world’s number 94 Saisai Zheng will also not serve Australia.
