WTA: Sania Mirza threatens long break

In 2017, Sania Mirza was no longer satisfactory for double ace Sania Mirza. The start of the new season is now delayed due to a knee injury.

The times when Sania Mirza collected almost any number of double titles on the WTA tour alongside Martina Hingis are over (2017, the Indian won only one tournament – at the beginning of the year in Brisbane with Bethanie Mattek-Sands), but the 31-year-old’s past season was still regarded as the highly respectable twelfth of the doubles’ World Oil Tournament. But now Mirza is threatening a longer break. Mirza has already cancelled her participation in the Australian Open, which she won in 2016 with Hingis.

An inflammation of the patellar tendon tortures the 41 time tournament winner, as she told the Times of India,”It’s extremely painful,”Mirza said,”I can walk straight ahead without any problems, but it’s painful to change direction and play. That’s the biggest problem.”

Mirza had her last appearance at the WTA tournament in Beijing, where she had lost with Peng Shuai in the semi-finals Martina Hingis and Yung-Jan Chan in the match tiebreak. Mirza was already struggling with problems.

“When I spoke to my doctor two months ago, I was advised to rest for a while and then see if we wanted to continue with surgery or injections, but the pain had not lessened. In any case, I cannot say definitively when I will be back,”concluded Mirza. The aim is to participate in the Commonwealth Games, which will begin at the beginning of April.
