Hopman Cup: Kerber equalizes: The decision falls in the Mixed

Angelique Kerber brought the German tennis team a 1-1 equaliser in the final of the Hopman Cup against Switzerland. The Kiel player left Belinda Bencic with no chance at the 6:4,6:1 and proved her strong form once again.

At the start of the Hopman Cup final, Alexander Zverev (Hamburg) had lost 7-6,0-6,2-6 to Roger Federer. The decision is the final mixed one in which Germany could make the third title win perfect.

Kerber/Zverev are unbeaten in the course of the tournament. Bencic/Federer have also won their three mixed matches so far. The only German winners in Perth so far were Michael Stich and Steffi Graf in 1993 and Boris Becker and Anke Huber in 1995.

Kerber celebrated her first victory in the fourth match against Bencic, convincing with her consistency and strong attacking strokes. Bencic, on the other hand, is different: The 20-year-old made many mistakes and was hardly able to cope with the Kieler’s game.

Zverev had made a strong start in the duel with 16-year-old Federer and put the Swiss player under pressure, especially in the tiebreak of the first set. Afterwards, however, Federer turned up the heat: In the second round, Zverev from Hamburg only made two wins, and also in the third set, Zverev scored the decisive break early on. Federer used his third match point to win.
