ATP: Daniil Medvedev beats Alex de Minaur in Sydney final

Daniil Medvedev finished the run of local hero Alex de Minaur in Sydney: The Russian won the final of the ATP World Tour 250 Tournament 1-6,6-4 and 7-5 and clinched his first win.

In the final with the two youngest participants since the final of Indian Wells 2007 between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal, 18-year-old Alex de Minaur got off to a better start: Before the eyes of Davis Cup captain Lleyton Hewitt, Minaur won the first set 6:1.

Afterwards, however, as in his semi-final against Fabio Fognini, Medvedev increased his lead over Fabio Fognini, scored a second round with 6:4 and quickly scored two breaks in the final. Medvedev had entered the main field of the tournament after qualifying and had beaten Philipp Kohlschreiber in two sets in round one. De Minaur had started with a wildcard, had defeated Fernando Verdasco, Feliciano Lopez and Benoit Paire on the way to his first ATP final.

In the third set De Minaur managed to break back to 2:4 in the third set – and later even equalised to 5:5. After 2:13 hours, however, Medvedev closed the match, to the disappointment of Australian fans, scoring 250 points for the world ranking and the prize money of 83,650 US dollars.
