Australian Open: Djokovic:”Federer and Nadal are the favorites.”

Novak Djokovic only sees himself in an outsider role before the Australian Open. For the Serbian, last year’s two finalists Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are the biggest contenders for the tournament’s first Grand Slam of the year. He also trusts two locals in Melbourne.

“Considering what they had for a year and they both made it to the finals last year,”Djokovic told Omnisport,”they are definitely big favourites, even though the tournament is of course open”.

In 2017, Federer beat the Spaniard Nadal in an epic final in the fifth set 6-4,3-6,6-1,3-6 and 6-3. Federer also won Wimbledon a few months later, while Nadal secured the Grand Slams in Paris and New York.

Djokovic notes, however, that local heroes Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis will also be expected,”Nick is in great shape,”said Djokovic,”the Australians always get outstanding support here. Kokkinakis is also a good player. Anything can happen in a Grand Slam.”

“Every player is here with heart and soul to give his best,”the 30-year-old added. In preparation for the Australian Open, Djokovic had to cancel an exhibition in Abu Dhabi before making his first match in Kooyong against Dominic Thiem under competition conditions.

“I’m still trying to improve some aspects of my game,”said Djokovic,”I hope I’m 100 percent ready for the Australian Open.”
