Australian Open: Alexander Zverev starts with solid three-set win
A good start for Alexander Zverev in Melbourne: Born in Hamburg, he advanced in the decisive phases of his match against the Italian Thomas Fabbiano and after a three-set win in the second round of the Australian Open.
Twice Thomas Fabbiano had the chance to send the match into extra time, both times Alexander Zverev increased his level, winning 6-1,7-6 (5) and 7-5 in the end and thus entered round two of the Australian Open 2018, where he met fellow countryman Peter Gojowczyk, who had won against Mikhail Kukushkin from Russia almost simultaneously.
According to Zverev, he was a bit rusty in his first official match since the ATP World Tour Finals in London at the end of November, as he explained in an interview after the match. Last week’s preparations have been very good, but he hopes to gain even better momentum in the upcoming games.
The affair against Fabbiano in the Rod Laver Arena lasted 2:22 hours, now it’s against Gojowczyk, who won in three sets against Kukushkin.
