ATP: Laureus Award: Federer beckons two awards

Tennis superstar Roger Federer has been nominated twice for the Laureus World Sports Awards and could set a record with his titles five and six.

The 36-year-old, who won last year’s Australian Open and Wimbledon after a long injury break, is in the final round of the Sportsman of the Year and Comeback of the Year categories.

The prestigious awards will be presented on 27 January. February in Monaco in eight categories. Alongside Federer, the main focus is on football stars: Cristiano Ronaldo, like the Swiss tennis icon in the race for the title of Sportsman of the Year, Real Madrid was nominated as World Team of the Year, and Kylian Mbappé has high hopes for the Breakthrough of the Year Award. FC Barcelona and Chapecoense have been nominated for the Comeback of the Year.

Ronaldo and Federer are competing for the title of athlete of the year with the recently doping tested cycling star Chris Froome as well as Rafael Nadal (tennis) and long-distance runner Mo Farah. Wimbledon winner Garbiñe Muguruza, runner Caster Semenya, Australian Open winner Serena Williams, sprinter Allyson Felix, swimming star Katie Ledecky and ski ace Mikaela Shiffrin have been nominated for the Sportswoman of the Year award.
