Australian Open: Federer completes Melbourne semi-finals
Roger Federer reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open 2018 after some initial difficulties at the end: the Swiss defeated Tomas Berdych 7:6 (1), 6:3 and 6:4 and now meets the South Korean Hyeon Chung.
Defending champion Roger Federer (36) is only two victories away from his 20th birthday. Grand Slam title. The Swiss player won the Australian Open quarter-finals against Tomas Berdych from the Czech Republic after 2:14 hours 7:6 (7:1), 6:3,6:4 and thus did not lose a set in the fifth match in Melbourne.
In the semi-final on Friday, Federer will face the World Rankings 58. Chung Hyeon from South Korea, who won against Alexander Zverev and record winner Novak Djokovic against the American Tennys Sandgren 6:4,7:6 (7:5), 6:3. On Thursday Marin Cilic (Croatia/No. 6) will play against Kyle Edmund from Great Britain for the final.
On the 26th. The duel with Berdych kept Federer for the 20th time. He had defeated Berdych in three sets in Melbourne in each of the last two years. Federer stood for 13. For the 13th time in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open and made it to the 13th place. In 2017 he had won his fifth title at the first Grand Slam of the season.
Berdych had made a strong start in the match at the Rod Laver Arena, Federer had lost his serve. The 19-times major winner managed to re-break at the last opportunity, after winning the tie-break in the first set, Federer could not be stopped – even though Berdych made a small comeback in the third set.
