ATP: Federer is catching up, Cilic with career high

Marin Cilic, Hyeon Chung and Kyle Edmund are the big winners in the ATP world ranking. One of the losers is a German.

The reward for Marin Cilic was already certain before his final match against Roger Federer in the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne: the Croatian would reach a new career high with his third Grand Slam final, while the current ATP world ranking list puts Cilic in third place. The charts are still led by Rafael Nadal, who had to retire from the quarter-finals against Cilic due to injury. Nadal’s lead over Roger Federer is clear after his 20th birthday. Major triumph shrunk to only 155 points.

Alexander Zverev and Dominic Thiem have lost one place each due to the advance of Cilics, the two best German-speaking players are in positions five and six.

The results at the Australian Open have given some players career-strength: Sam Querrey has righteously improved unspectacularly to twelfth place, despite his second-round defeat.

However, the two defeated semi-finalists managed to make a big leap forward: Kyle Edmund is now number 26, last week the Briton was 23 places lower. And Hyeon Chung halved his ranking to 29.

Not quite as impressive as the improvements of Diego Schwartzman and Adrian Mannarino, but the Argentinean (currently 24) and the French (now 25) also made it to the top two places.

Second best German is Philipp Kohlschreiber in 36th place, Mischa Zverev lost out to Chung in round one due to illness and 18 places is currently number 53, while Austria’s number two is still Gerald Melzer: The Lower Austrian improved by four positions to number 98.
