WTA: Simona Halep – A Case for Crowd Funding?

Simona Halep doesn’t have a supplier at the moment. The resulting loss of income was to be replaced by a crowd funding of the second in the world ranking. A Romanian ex-politician says.

Not so long ago, there was the ironic call in the social media to start a fund-raising campaign for FC Bayern Munich, because its chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge had meant in all seriousness that the German Bundesliga would please be grateful to the record champion, because one would dissuade a competitor (Schalke 04) of his best player (Leon Goretzka). A collection of gratitude to FC Bayern would only be appropriate, according to the tenor on Twitter.

At least on the same humorous level is the proposal of a former Romanian politician who had called for crowd-funding for the current number two in the world, Simona Halep. The reason? Since the beginning of the year, the second place in the world rankings has not been under contract with any supplier and has reached the finals of the Australian Open in neutral clothes.

Until the end of last season, Halep had been on the road with the three strips from Herzogenaurach, a connection that the Romanian has certainly been rewarded very sportily during the past few years. Apart from that, the 26-year-old won more than 22 million US dollars in prize money – albeit before taxes.

Vasile Dincu, formerly deputy prime minister in Halep’s homeland, does not want to see Romania’s sporting figurehead suffer any more:”For several weeks we have already complained that Simona did not get two million from Adidas,”said the politician on Facebook:”What an injustice, what a pity for our great champion! There’s a story about it every day.”

However, the solution would be so close: If each of the three million fans who watched Halep defeat Caroline Wozniacki on TV in Melbourne in the final, who donated only one euro to Halep, then the whole of Romania could decide what would be written on Simona Halep’s clothes. The country that has no other problems! At the moment, however, the model athlete is suffering from an ankle injury – Simona Halep has to fit in against the women from Canada in the Fed Cup.
