Davis Cup: Next bloodletting for Czech Republic – Tomas Berdych resigns

The Czech Davis Cup team will have to reorganise: After Radek Stepanek, Tomas Berdych will no longer compete for his home country.

Tomas Berdych’s opening match at the ATP World Tour 500 Tournament in Rotterdam was successfully won by Tomas Berdych against Mischa Zverev, and now it’s either Viktor Troicki or Jan-Lennard Struff in the Netherlands (against whom the Czech has already lost this year).

The day before the tournament, however, Berdych put an end to a very successful chapter for him: the Davis Cup. After Radek Stepanek, who finished his career at the end of last year, the Czech Republic’s team will lose the next pillar on which the successes of the last decade were based.

Berdych’s first appearance in the Czech team dates back to 2003. In 2013, Berdych won the title in Belgrade. In 2012, Berdych had a record of 10:1 victories in singles and doubles, twelve months later with 7:1.

Tomas Berdych completed his last Davis Cup appearance in Germany in 2016 in Hanover: there he defeated Alexander Zverev in five sets, won the decisive doubles with Radek Stepanek on Saturday, but had to give up injured against Philipp Kohlschreiber on the final day.
