ATP: Nishikori continues, Gojowczyk must give up
Kei Nishikori is in the quarter-finals at his comeback tournament, the New York Open. On the other hand, the only German participant dropped out.
Peter Gojowczyk had defended himself against Adrian Mannarino for exactly two hours at the New York Open in the Nassau Coliseum – but then the German Davis Cup player had to give up at the score of 7:6 (5), 5:7 and 1:4 because of an injury. Gojowczyk had won the first round against Blaz Kavcic. Mannarino will face qualifying Adrian Menendez-Maceiras in the quarter-finals.
The reason for the abandonment of Gojowczyk was probably a blister on the foot. This is a problem with which the resident of Munich has been struggling for years. And that also prevented the semi-finalists of the Australian Open, Hyeong Chung, from participating in the ATP World Tour 250 tournament in New York State.
The comeback of Kei Nishikori is going off without a hitch at the premiere edition of the tournament on Long Island. The Japanese player had prepared for the Challenger Tour in two tournaments and won the Challenger Tour in Dallas. After an effortless opening win over Noah Rubin, Nishikori defeated Evgenyi Donskoy of Russia 6-2 and 6-4.
Nishikori’s opponent in the quarter-finals will not be John Isner as expected, but Radu Albot. The Moldovan won against the US local hero in three sets.
