WTA: Görges: The Failure Devil Helps High Flights
Julia Görges continues her high-flying career at the WTA Premier 5 Tournament in Doha:”The world ranking is the first player to have broken through the 100 aces barrier this season. In addition to the serve,”Jule” has also made a friend of the bug devil.

With a total of 105 aces in 14 matches, Görges has so far been the “Ace Queen” in 2018. The current average (7.5 points per match) is also higher than its previous peak of 6.13 aces in the 2014 season:”Of course, the serve is one of my weapons which I try to use as well as possible,”said the 29-year-old in the tennisnet interview in Doha:”It’s good to know that you can always beat an ace in tight situations or prepare for a point win with the service”.
In the off-season, Görges and her coach Michael Geserer worked on the serve, among other things,”This also happens at the tournaments. This is a constant work that we are continuing,”said the new top ten player, who also blames her new mindset for the success of the past few months. The victories at the last six events – and the titles in Auckland (2018) as well as in Zhuhai and Moscow (both 2017) – were won 21:2.
On Friday (18.00 hrs CET/live on DAZN) she will face two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova (Czech Republic/No. 16) in the quarter-finals at the Night Session at the Khalifa International Tennis Complex. Even then, the motto will be: mistakes allowed! I have learned to see some things a little differently. Mistakes are good for my game because I can learn from them. It makes you feel better,”said Görges, who says by minimizing the demands made on you,”I don’t expect me to do every point in the match. “There’s no point if I hit the ball with a thousand things on the line.”
Rather, it regards each encounter as a new challenge, as finding the perfect adjustment. The 1.80-metre-large gorges have the ability to beat winners from any position in the court,”Some attempts make sense, some are less,”explained the Porsche ambassador:”But when the ball goes out three metres, next time I’ll just take the line a little more,” learning to play tennis, so to speak – with a positive attitude.
Görges has also learned to put things into perspective:”Being a professional,” she emphasizes,”this is a profession that I enjoy very much. I want to be as good as I can. She also has a lot of praise for her coach and manager Geserer, who, like physio and fitness coach Florian” Flo “Zitzelsberger, has been working with the native of Bad Oldesloerin since the end of 2015.” Sometimes you don’t see the forest full of trees, so it’s nice to have someone with you who says:’ Watch out, it’s nice to have someone with you who says:’ Watch out for the trees!
