ATP: Zverev after defeating Gojowczyk in the quarter-finals
Alexander Zverev is in the quarter-finals at the ATP World Tour 500 tournament in Acapulco: The native of Hamburg won in two sets against Peter Gojowczyk in the German duel.
Exactly 90 minutes the two Davis Cup players from the team of Michael Kohlmann were facing each other, then the favourite with 7:6 (6) and 6:3 had the better end for himself. After Rafael Nadal’s rejection, Zverev is the top-ranked player in the tableau and will now face Ryan Harrison in the quarter-finals, ending Rio champion Diego Schwartzman’s triumphal march.
As in the opening match against US-American Mackenzie McDonlad, Zverev also dominated against Gojowczyk with his serve, but left a breakzu throughout the match. However, the native of Hamburg proved to be mercilessly efficient as a backstroke: two chances, two breaks. Zverev remains on a semi-final collision course with buddy Dominic Thiem:”The Austrian had no problems with the Canadian Denis Shapovalov, has to beat either Juan Martin del Potro or David Ferrer in the quarter-finals.
For Gojowczyk, who hadn’t made it to the match, the last two weeks were nevertheless a success – after all, the Munich player reached the final in Delray Beach and also won a round in Acapulco. Zverev and Gojowczyk had already been facing each other at the Australian Open at the beginning of the year, which was also the occasion on which Germany’s number one had won.
Against his next opponent, 25-year-old Harrison, in 60th place in the ATP world ranking, Alexander Zverev has never played before.
