ATP: Zverev confident in the semi-final of Acapulco
Alexander Zverev is in the semi-finals at the Acapulco ATP World Tour 500 tournament: Germany’s number one defeated Ryan Harrison in two sets and is now waiting for either Dominic Thiem or Juan Martin del Potro.
The German number one is slowly gaining momentum: With a strong performance Alexander Zverev secured a place in the final round in Acapulco after only 67 minutes and a 6:4 and 6:1. The youngest player in the tableau has to be considered a big favourite for the tournament victory in Mexico after this performance. Last year, the 20-year-old won five titles, including two of the 1000 category in Rome and Montreal. The start into the new season has been rather mixed with the loss against Hyeong Chang at the Australian Open and the defeat against Andreas Seppi in Rotterdam.
Zverev made his first break in the fifth game of the first set, but had to make up for 40-0 at a score of 4-3. The Hamburg native achieved this with five points in a row. In the second round, Alexander Zverev had no problems with the American, who had finished the previous round of Rio champion Diego Schwartzman’s victory run. The German Davis Cup player only allowed one more break point and took advantage of his chances as a backstroke.
In the round of sixteen against fellow countryman Peter Gojowczyk, Zverev had even had much bigger problems and had to defend set balls in the first round. Alexander Zverev has a negative balance sheet against his future opponents: Zverev lost the only match against Juan Martin del Potro last autumn in Shanghai in three sets, and he only won one of five games against Dominic Thiem.
