Tennis: hopeful junior tennis player Jurij Rodionov receives US$25,000 in ITF funding

The Austrian hopeful youngster Jurij Rodionov has received a youth grant of 25,000 US dollars (approx. 20,000 euros) from the international tennis federation ITF.

As one of 15 players from 13 countries, Wimbledon double finalist Rodionov received the newly created junior promotion. Only in January Sebastian Ofner from the Grand Slam Development Fund received the same amount.

David Haggerty, President of the ITF, commented in a press release on the promotion fund:”The transition from junior tennis to professional business is a huge challenge. With the Junior Player Grants we want to support talented young players in a targeted way so that they can establish themselves on the professional circus”.

Unfortunately, this week Rodionov didn’t have the athleticism he wanted. In Rovinj, Croatia, the 18-year-old Javier Barranco Cosano from Spain was beaten 4-6,6-4 and 5-7 in scarcely three sets. Rodionov thus missed a purely Austrian round of the last sixteen. Barranco Cosano will now play Pascal Brunner, who only played two games against Frenchman Samuel Bensoussan in the first round.
