WTA: Indian Wells: Angelique Kerber destroys Caroline Garcia and reaches quarter-finals
Angelique Kerber has reached the Indian Wells quarter-finals in an impressive manner. At the WTA Premier Mandatory Event in the Californian desert, the 30-year-old won 6-1,6-1 against Caroline Garcia.
“I’m really happy that we’re in 2018 and I left this messed up 2017 behind me,”said Kerber after the match,”I’m really happy with the way I played today. The conditions here are very challenging with the wind and humidity.”
Kerber caught a lightning start and quickly pulled away 3-0 in the first set before she had to give up her serve. After a fiercely contested fifth game with the better end for the Germans, however, Garcia was unnerved and Kerber secured number one after 34 minutes.
The same key continued in the second set: Garcia made 23 mistakes over the entire match, while her opponent produced only twelve of them. With strong first serve and an outstanding forehand, Kerber left the Frenchman out of the game and turned her first match point after 63 minutes.
Kerber’s victory was an impressive result in the current season. When the two-time Major Winner won her first set, she was the winner in all 13 matches.
In the quarter-finals, Kerber, for whom last year’s quarter-finals ended with the last eight, will face Daria Kasatkina of Russia, who surprisingly eliminated Caroline Wozniacki 6-4,7-5.
