Davis Cup: Spain captain confirms Rafael Nadal’s interest in Germany duel

Spain’s Davis Cup captain Sergi Bruguera spoke about a possible deployment of Rafael Nadal in the duel against Germany during the ATP Masters 1000. After Nadal’s training comeback, the 47-year-old is hoping for a race of the number one in the making.

Nadal started with punch training on Thursday – the 16-time Grand Slam champion posted a video of the unit on Instagram. Before that he prepared for his comeback with intensive swimming training. Now he could use the Davis Cup to collect match practice on clay.

“Rafa’s attitude is always the same: he wants to play in the Davis Cup,” said Bruguera, who has been Spain’s team captain since this season, to Marca this weekend.

Spain chose Valencia as its location for the comparison with Sascha Zverev and Co. Nadal’s last Davis Cup appearance took place in September 2016, when he and Marc Lopez scored Spain’s decisive third point in New Delhi against India in doubles.

“I’m in daily contact with him, he’ll let me know before Tuesday,” Bruguera said. Then – ten days before the game – he has to announce his squad for the semi-finals.

After Roger Federer’s defeat in the second round of the Miami Open, Rafael Nadal will again take first place in the world rankings next Monday.
