WTA: Injured Angelique Kerber has to take a break – further tournament planning unclear
Angelique Kerber has to take a training break for the time being after her task in the round of 16 at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix. A medical examination in Munich on Friday morning revealed a muscular injury in the right thigh. Further tournament planning is still unclear, her management announced on request from tennisnet.
Kerber originally wanted to start at the Premier Mandatory Tournament in Madrid from May 8, after which she had the event in Rome (from May 13) and the French Open in Paris (from May 27) on her schedule. The length of the break has not yet been determined.
The twelfth in the world rankings had to give up their round of 16 against Estonian Anett Kontaveit on Thursday evening at a score of 0:6, 0:2 injured. Previously, she had taken a medical timeout at 0:5 in the first set.
“I have noticed the pain between the thighs and groin for the last few days and I have tried everything possible. But it got worse and worse in the first two games of the match. I gave everything, but I couldn’t do it anymore,” Kerber had said afterwards.
In 2015 and 2016, the two-time Grand Slam winner won the title at the indoor sand court event. Before her start at this year’s Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, Sydney Champion Kerber had always reached at least the quarter-finals at all her tournament starts in 2018.
