ATP: Stan Wawrinka and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga cancel the Masters in Madrid
Two former ATP Top 5 players have to pause longer than originally assumed due to injury. Both Stan Wawrinka and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga had to cancel their participation in the ATP Masters in Madrid next week due to injuries.
“Unfortunately, our finalist for 2013, Stan Wawrinka, must withdraw injured. We wish you a quick recovery, Stan,” tweetted the organizers of the Madrid Open on Tuesday.
Wawrinka played his last game in February. In Marseille, the three-time Grand Slam winner had to give up against Belarusian Ilya Ivashka in the round of 16; his knee continues to cause problems.
Wawrinka was last seen again with his former successful coach Magnus Norman, who is supposed to accompany him on his way back to a regular tour life.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has to struggle with the same position. The Frenchman had undergone knee surgery at the beginning of April. Besides Madrid, Tsonga will not be able to compete in Rome either, a start at the home major in Paris is still open.
Tsonga’s last appearance took place last January, when he injured his knee in the semi-final against compatriot Lucas Pouille and had to give up.
Mischa Zverev and Peter Gojowczyk can look forward to a place in the main draw.
